At the end of 2016, I really wanted to step my skin care game up. My makeup collection was already expansive but I was settling on cheap skin care. The first step of having a flawless makeup application is to also have a flawless base. My skin was and still is, far from it. I decided to take the plunge and purchase multiple items from Kiehls and Drunk Elephant which I have fallen in love with. I also wanted to venture into Sunday Riley which I had heard so many amazing things about.
Since I already had an array of serums and night products I was really looking for something to use in the morning. Which is why the first product I purchased from then was the Martian Mattifying Melting Water-Gel Toner.
This product runs for $55 at Sephora for 4.4 ounces
This product promises to:
- Reduce pore size
- Mattify excess oil
- Soothe and diminish redness
- Tone and tighten
- Purify oily and problematic skin
- Keeps foundation set all day
How it performs:
Now, these are all things I was looking for in a morning skin care product. This is a gel-like toner that transforms into a ‘water’ consistency when massaged into the skin. It is green when pumped out of the bottle but does not appear green what-so-ever on the face. After the initial application, this product feels great on the skin. It made my skin feel tight but still plumped and ready for makeup application. I had high hopes at first but throughout the day really saw none of the promises this product made.
Every time I use this product I feel like I get oily about halfway through the day, so around 4-5 hour mark since putting on makeup. This happens even when I use my trusted primers and foundations. It’s like it all of a sudden it stops keeping me matte and all my oils resurface at once.
Even though I was immediately disappointed with this product, I continued to use it because sometimes skincare products take a while before you notice the difference in your skin. I’m over halfway through the bottle at this point and can’t really say I’ve seen any improvements with my skin. It definitely doesn’t keep me matte or set my foundation throughout the day. It hasn’t made a noticeable difference in my pore size or the overall tightness of my skin but those are two things that are difficult to measure. My skin is still red and problematic and I know this product has not helped in that area at all.
Unfortunately, this product is a definite no-go for me and I will not be repurchasing. It has also slightly turned me off from Sunday Riley’s skin care products for right now but since I have heard such good things I probably will give them another chance in the future.
